Australia’s most successful Olympian Emma McKeon calls time on glittering career

Nov 26, 2024

Sydney: Australia’s most decorated Olympian, Emma McKeon, has announced her retirement from swimming, ending a remarkable career filled with 14 Olympic medals and 20 world championship podium finishes.

The 30-year-old sprinter confirmed the news on Monday, reflecting on a journey that shaped her life. “I’ll definitely miss it,” McKeon said. “Swimming has given me amazing relationships and molded me into who I am. But I’m ready for the next chapter, and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

McKeon first made her Olympic debut in Rio 2016, where she won gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay, two silvers in relays, and a bronze in the 200m freestyle. In Tokyo 2021, she dominated the pool, winning gold in the 100m and 50m freestyle, along with two relay golds and three bronze medals, earning the most medals by any athlete at those Games.

Her achievements go beyond her six Olympic gold medals and five world titles. She was part of relay teams that set eight world records, with three still standing today. Reflecting on her journey, McKeon hoped to inspire young athletes: “I want kids to know I was once in their shoes, dreaming big. Keep going, even through ups and downs.”

Australia’s swimming coach, Rohan Taylor, praised her for her grit and poise. “She’s been an incredible role model, both in and out of the pool. People see her grace, but her toughness is unmatched,” he said.

Rob Woodhouse, McKeon’s uncle and Swimming Australia CEO, highlighted her stunning win in the 100m freestyle at Tokyo as a career-defining moment. In that race, she edged out Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey by 0.31 seconds, showcasing her competitive spirit.

Though her time in the pool is over, McKeon’s legacy as one of the sport’s greats will continue to inspire generations to come.
