Paris 2024: Top medal moments on Day 9
Hunter Woodhall from the USA won his first Paralympic gold medal in the men’s 400m T62 race. He finished ahead of Johannes Floors from Germany, the world record holder.
Woodhall said, “It feels like a dream. I didn’t realize I had won until I crossed the finish line. Johannes is a tough competitor.”
Woodhall’s win comes just weeks after his wife, Tara Davis-Woodhall, won Olympic gold in the long jump. “We dreamed of winning gold together, and now we have,” said Davis-Woodhall.
Earlier, Ecuador’s Kiara Rodriguez won gold in the women’s long jump T47 with a jump of 6.05 meters.
Praveen’s High Jump Victory
Kumar Praveen from India won his first gold in the men’s high jump T64 with a jump of 2.08 meters. Derek Loccident from the USA took silver with 2.06 meters, and Temurbek Giyazov from Uzbekistan and Maciej Lepiato from Poland shared bronze with 2.03 meters.
Praveen said, “My coach, family, and India supported me. Hard work, training, and a good diet helped me win.”
Close Finish in Para Cycling
In the women’s Para cycling road race C4-5, Great Britain’s Sarah Storey narrowly won gold over France’s Heidi Gaugain. Storey finished just ahead in a very close race.
Storey said, “I’m thrilled that I won. It was a tough race, and Heidi made a great move. It’s incredible to win gold again.”
This win makes it Storey’s second gold medal at Paris 2024 and her 19th Paralympic gold.
Record-Breaking Powerlifting
Bonnie Bunyau Gustin from Malaysia set a new world and Paralympic record in the men’s up to 72kg powerlifting to win gold. “I’m very happy to break the record and win gold,” Gustin said.
Malaysia’s other gold at Paris 2024 came from Para badminton player Liek Hou Cheah.
Davies Wins Silver in Table Tennis
Great Britain’s Robert Davies won silver in the Para table tennis men’s singles MS1 final, losing to Cuba’s Yunier Fernandez. Davies, who missed the Tokyo 2020 Games due to injury, said, “I’m pleased with the silver. Coming back from injury has been tough.”
USA Tops in Para Equestrian
The USA won gold in the Para equestrian team event. Roxanne Trunnell, Fiona Howard, and Rebecca Hart made a great team, with Howard achieving a personal best score. “I’m proud of the whole team,” Hart said. The Netherlands won silver, and Germany took bronze.
Martins Maldonado Wins Gold in Judo
Brazil’s Alana Martins Maldonado won gold in the women’s -70kg J2 judo, beating China’s Wang Yue. “I’m very grateful and happy to win,” said Martins Maldonado. Spain’s Marta Arce Payno also won bronze in the women’s -57kg J2 judo.
Kamiji Ends Dutch Streak in Wheelchair Tennis
Japan’s Yui Kamiji won gold in the women’s wheelchair tennis singles, defeating Netherlands’ Diede de Groot. This victory ended the Dutch gold medal streak that started in Barcelona 1992. Kamiji also won the doubles event earlier in the Games.
Hewett and Reid Win Men’s Doubles Gold
Great Britain’s Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid won gold in the men’s doubles wheelchair tennis, achieving the ‘Golden Slam’ by winning all four Grand Slam titles and Paralympic gold.
Jana and Coutya Complete Gold Medal Sweep
Thailand’s Saysunee Jana won her third gold medal in the women’s epee category B fencing. Great Britain’s Dimitri Coutya also won his third medal of the Games, taking gold in men’s epee category B.
Turkiye’s First Medal in Wheelchair Fencing
Hakan Akkaya from Turkiye won the country’s first-ever Paralympic medal in wheelchair fencing, taking bronze in the men’s epee category A.
Jiang and Maskill Shine in Swimming
China’s Jiang Yuyan won her sixth gold medal in the women’s 400m freestyle S6. Great Britain’s Poppy Maskill also won gold in the women’s 100m backstroke S14.
Barlaam and Hance Win Swimming Gold
Italy’s Simone Barlaam won gold in the men’s 100m butterfly S9. Australia’s Callum Simpson and Benjamin Hance also won gold in swimming, with Hance dedicating his win to his late father.
Iran Wins Men’s Sitting Volleyball Gold
Iran’s men’s sitting volleyball team won gold by defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-1. Iran’s Morteza Mehrzadselakjani was the top point scorer. Egypt won bronze in a close match against Germany.
