Paris 2024: Top medal moments on Day 8
Yui Kamiji and Manami Tanaka from Japan made a big comeback to defeat the Netherlands’ Diede de Groot and Aniek van Koot in the wheelchair tennis women’s doubles at Roland-Garros. The match lasted about three hours, ending with a score of 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-8. This is the first time the Dutch team has lost the women’s doubles title since it began in 1992.
Kamiji and Tanaka are the first Japanese women to win a gold medal in wheelchair tennis. Kamiji was thrilled and mentioned that playing against the Dutch, who have a strong history in the sport, was a huge challenge. She’s also looking forward to facing de Groot in the women’s singles final on September 6.
France Shines in Para Cycling and Judo
In Para cycling, Florian Jouanny from France won gold in the men’s road race H1-2. Despite the rain, Jouanny was pleased with the support from the home crowd.
Australia’s Lauren Parker won gold in the women’s road race H1-4, adding to her two other medals from Paris 2024. She was thrilled with her achievements.
Germany’s Annika Zeyen-Giles earned a bronze medal in the women’s H1-3 individual time trial, her second bronze at the Games.
In judo, French athlete Sandrine Martinet won silver in the women’s J2 –48kg event. She was proud of this medal, especially after overcoming significant health issues.
Medal Moments in Para Athletics
Despite the rain, athletes at Stade de France competed in eight events. Mouncef Bouja from Morocco won his first Paralympic gold in the men’s 400m T12.
Algeria’s Skander Djamil Athmani secured his second gold medal of the Games in the men’s 400m T13. Safia Djelal from Algeria also won gold in the women’s shot put F57.
In the evening, Vanessa Low from Australia set a world record in the women’s long jump T63. Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland and Omara Durand of Cuba won gold in the women’s 400m T53 and women’s 100m T12, respectively.
Türkiye Dominates in Goalball
Türkiye’s Sevda Altunoluk and Fatma Gul Guler led their team to victory in the women’s goalball tournament, beating Israel 8-3 to win their third consecutive gold medal. Altunoluk became the first person to win three Paralympic golds in goalball.
Japan’s men’s team also won their first-ever Paralympic goalball gold with a 4-3 overtime win over Ukraine.
Japan Wins Bronze in Boccia
Japan’s mixed team, including Hidetaka Sugimura, Hiromi Endo, and Takayuki Hirose, won bronze in boccia by defeating the Republic of Korea 8-3. For Endo, this was her second medal of the Games.
New Champions in Para Powerlifting
Egyptian lifters won gold in two powerlifting events. Mohamed Elmenyawy won his first gold in the men’s up to 59kg, while Rehab Ahmed won gold in the women’s up to 55kg, after winning silver at the previous Games.
China’s Zou Yi took gold in the men’s up to 65kg final. Venezuela’s Clara Sarah Fuentes Monasterio set a new Paralympic record in the women’s up to 50kg.
Aurelie Rivard Back on Top
Canada’s Aurelie Rivard won gold in the women’s 400m freestyle S10, her first gold of Paris 2024. Despite earlier disappointments, she was proud of her achievement.
Brazil’s Talisson Henrique Glock added a silver in the men’s 100m freestyle S6 to his two bronze medals.
China Sweeps in Para Swimming
China dominated the men’s 50m freestyle S5, with Guo Jincheng taking gold and setting a new world record. This was his fifth medal of the Games.
Para Archery and Table Tennis Highlights
Italy’s Stefano Travisani and Elisabetta Mijno won gold in the mixed team recurve open in Para archery. Slovenia’s Dejan Fabcic and Ziva Lavrinc won bronze.
China’s Feng Panfeng won his 10th Paralympic gold in table tennis, while the Netherlands’ Kelly van Zon won her fourth women’s singles WS7 title, and Japan’s Natsuki Wada earned the country’s first women’s Para table tennis gold.
Final Shooting Para Sport Gold
Germany’s Natascha Hiltrop won gold in the R6 mixed 50m rifle prone SH1 final, setting a Paralympic record of 250.2.
China Wins in Wheelchair Fencing
China’s teams won gold in both the women’s and men’s foil team events. Hungary and Great Britain won silver in the respective events. Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Krajnyak and Eva Andrea Hajmasi were thrilled with their silver medals.
