Paris 2024: Marathon wraps up Para athletics on final day of the Paralympics

Today is the last day of the Paris 2024 Paralympics! Four sports will have their final events: Para athletics, Para powerlifting, Para canoeing, and wheelchair basketball. The Games will end with a fantastic Closing Ceremony.

Here’s what to expect on Day 11:

Para Athletics: Marathon Finals The Para athletics events wrap up with four marathons today.

  • Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug from Switzerland are favorites in the women’s and men’s marathon T54.
  • Misato Michishita from Japan hopes to win gold in the women’s marathon T12 again, after her win in Tokyo 2020.

The marathons start in Seine-Saint-Denis, go through Place de la Concorde, the Champs-Elysees, and around the Arc de Triomphe, and finish in front of the Esplanades des Invalides.

Wheelchair Basketball: Gold Medal Match At Bercy Arena, the Netherlands will face the USA for the gold medal in wheelchair basketball.

  • The Netherlands are the defending champions.
  • The USA is looking for their first gold since Rio 2016.

Earlier in the day, China and Canada will compete for the bronze medal. Canada hopes to get their first Paralympic medal since Athens 2004.

Para Canoe and Para Powerlifting: Final Medals

  • Para canoe will have five finals at Vaires-sur-Marne Stadium.
  • Para powerlifting will have four finals at La Chapelle Arena.

Watch out for Folashade Oluwafemiayo from Nigeria in Para powerlifting. She holds the world record with 165kg in the women’s over 86kg division.

Closing Ceremony: A “Giant Party” The Stade de France, which hosted track and field events, will be the site for the Closing Ceremony. It will be a “giant party” featuring French electronic music artists.

The ceremony will celebrate the 4,400 athletes from around the world who competed in 22 sports. The Paralympic flag will be handed over to Los Angeles, the host city for the 2028 Games.
