Records Broken and Medals Galore at Paris 2024 Paralympics

The fourth day of the Paris 2024 Paralympics saw thrilling performances and record-breaking swims at the Paris La Defense Arena on Sunday, 1 September.

Ukraine’s Mykhailo Serbin stole the show by setting a new world record in the men’s 100m backstroke S11 final. Serbin, who is both the reigning Paralympic and Manchester 2023 World champion, finished with a time of 1:05.84, surpassing his own record.

Great Britain continued its dominance in the pool, winning four gold medals on the day. Maisie Summers-Newton, who won gold in the women’s 200m medley SM6 the previous day, set a Paralympic record in the women’s 100m breaststroke SB6 final. “I felt less pressure and really enjoyed this race,” Summers-Newton said. “To defend both my titles is incredible.”

China also excelled, earning three gold medals including Yang Hong’s win in the men’s 100m breaststroke SB6 with a Paralympic record time of 1:18.34.

France’s Emeline Pierre made her mark by winning her first Paralympic gold in the women’s 100m freestyle S10 final, thrilling the home crowd. However, four-time defending champion Jessica Long missed out on a medal in the women’s 200m individual medley SM8 final, a disappointing result for the American swimmer.
