Paris 2024: “Everything we dreamed of happened” says IPC President
As the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games come to a close after 11 exciting days, what are your thoughts just before the Closing Ceremony?
These Games have been truly amazing, setting a new standard. The sports were top-notch, the venues were impressive, and the crowd’s energy was incredible. Everyone, from the athletes to the National Paralympic Committees and International Federations, is thrilled. I’m already thinking about how we can build on this success for the Milano Cortina 2026 and LA 2028 Games.
Can you share three of your favorite moments from the Games?
- The first medal for the Refugee Paralympic Team was very special. Zakia Khudadadi won bronze in Para taekwondo.
- Watching blind football at the Eiffel Tower Stadium was amazing. The silent Mexican wave from the crowd showed how well the spectators understood and embraced the event.
- The Opening Ceremony was fantastic. It took place outside a stadium and was a wonderful representation of the Paralympic Movement, with Paris and its people really embracing it.
What did you think of the sports level in Paris?
The sports were outstanding, better than ever before. We saw world records and impressive performances from both new and experienced athletes. It was exciting to see countries like Mauritius, Moldova, and Nepal win their first medals, showing the growth of the Paralympic Movement worldwide.
What role did the crowd play in Paris? Do you have a message for the fans?
A huge “merci beaucoup” to the fans! They were amazing and created a fantastic atmosphere. They cheered for athletes from all countries and truly understood the spirit of the Paralympic Movement. Their support was crucial in making these Games spectacular.
Volunteers also played a big part. They worked hard behind the scenes to help everything run smoothly and were proud to be part of the event.
How did broadcasting the Games to more places than ever before impact the movement?
It’s important to reach people all over the world. The high broadcast numbers show that the Paralympic Movement is growing. When people see athletes with disabilities excelling on a global stage, it sends a powerful message about breaking down barriers and promoting inclusion in all aspects of society.
Paris 2024 has set a high standard for future host cities. What does this mean?
Paris has set a new benchmark for future Games, just like previous cities like Barcelona, Beijing, and London did. This sets a challenge for Milano Cortina 2026, LA 2028, and other future hosts to meet or exceed this level of excellence. It shows the potential of what the Paralympic Movement can achieve and offers many opportunities for the future.
Finally, what message do you have for the athletes who competed in Paris?
You are all heroes. Your performances were incredible, especially considering the challenges leading up to the Games. Thank you for showcasing the Paralympic Movement so powerfully. Enjoy the Closing Ceremony and get some rest. We have a lot of work ahead to make the next Games even better.
