Shahid Afridi calls for ‘global unity’ amid Champions Trophy debate
Shahid Afridi Calls for Unity Ahead of Champions Trophy 2025
KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has weighed in on the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 debate, urging all nations to participate and embrace the spirit of cricket. Taking to social media, Afridi emphasized unity, drawing parallels with the Olympics to highlight the importance of setting differences aside for the sake of the sport.
“Cricket is at a critical juncture, facing one of its biggest challenges since the late 1970s,” Afridi wrote on X. “Now is the time to let the game bring us together. If nations divided by history can unite in the Olympic spirit, why not for cricket and the Champions Trophy?”
He further encouraged teams to visit Pakistan. “I hope every team experiences our warmth, hospitality, and unforgettable moments that transcend the cricket field,” Afridi added.
The Champions Trophy has hit a roadblock due to the BCCI’s refusal to send the Indian team to Pakistan. In response, the PCB has formally reached out to the ICC, seeking clarification on critical issues.
The PCB has reportedly asked the ICC when the BCCI first informed them about their decision and has requested a written explanation from the Indian board. Additionally, the PCB wants to know how the ICC plans to address India’s stance.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Mohammad Rizwan, stated that the PCB would handle the situation but assured a warm welcome for the Indian team if they decided to participate in the tournament.
