Djokovic Poised for Grand Slam Comeback at Australian Open

Novak Djokovic is gearing up for a strong return at the Australian Open in January, ready to challenge rising stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz on tennis’ biggest stage. The 24-time Grand Slam champion, who endured a difficult 2024 season, is determined to reclaim his dominance in the sport.

After a stellar 2023, during which Djokovic secured three Grand Slam titles, 2024 marked a dry spell for the 37-year-old, who failed to win any majors for the first time since 2017. World No. 1 Sinner, who claimed his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne by dethroning Djokovic, also defeated the Serb in the Shanghai Masters final. Meanwhile, Alcaraz continued his meteoric rise by retaining his Wimbledon title and winning Roland Garros.

Despite the setbacks, Djokovic showcased his resilience, capturing his first Olympic gold medal in Paris by defeating Alcaraz just weeks after their Wimbledon clash.

“I still believe I can compete at the highest level,” Djokovic told Gazzetta dello Sport. “Sinner and Alcaraz are the best players right now, with (Alexander) Zverev also in the mix. But I’m ready physically and mentally to challenge them. My experience will play a key role.”

Currently ranked seventh, Djokovic acknowledged that 2024 has been one of his least successful seasons in the past decade. As a result, he plans to adjust his schedule to prioritize the Grand Slams.

“Next year, I’ll play more tournaments, but my focus will be on the Slams. I’ll give everything to win if my body allows it,” he said.

Reflecting on Sinner’s breakthrough year, Djokovic praised the Italian’s achievements while hinting at the challenges of maintaining consistency at the top.

“Winning your first Slams and reaching No. 1 is impressive, but staying there for years is the real test,” he noted.

As the last of the “Big Four” still competing for major titles following the retirements of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray, Djokovic has brought Murray into his coaching team to bolster his bid for an 11th Australian Open title.

The first Grand Slam of the year begins on January 12, and Djokovic is determined to make his mark once again on tennis history.
