Dope test controversy: Sinner hires Djokovic’s former fitness coach

Sep 18, 2024

New Fitness Coach and Physiotherapist
World number one Jannik Sinner has hired fitness coach Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio. This move comes after Sinner’s earlier dismissal of key staff members due to a doping issue.

Expertise of Marco Panichi
Marco Panichi, who joins Sinner’s team, has previously worked with 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Panichi’s background includes enhancing Djokovic’s physical conditioning and injury prevention, which will now benefit Sinner’s performance on the court.

Doping Incident and Staff Changes
Sinner tested positive for the banned steroid clostebol in March. The positive result was linked to a spray administered by his former physio, Giacomo Naldi, instead of the required treatment. Trainer Umberto Ferrara provided the spray. Following the incident, Sinner dismissed Naldi and Ferrara.

Tribunal Decision and WADA Review
In August, an independent tribunal cleared Sinner of fault, accepting his explanation of accidental contamination. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is reviewing the decision and reserves the right to appeal.

Training and Upcoming Tournaments
Panichi and Badio began their work with Sinner at his Monte Carlo training base. They will travel with him to upcoming tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai.

Recent Achievements
Sinner, the ATP’s top-ranked singles player, won the US Open on September 8, defeating Taylor Fritz 6-6-7 in a dramatic final at Arthur Ashe Stadium, adding to his earlier Australian Open victory.
