BCCI turns down ICC’s request to host Women’s T20 World Cup
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has declined the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) request to host the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in October.
Originally, Bangladesh was supposed to host the tournament from October 3-20, but due to political issues in the country, the ICC started looking for other options.
BCCI Chairman Jay Shah told the Times of India, “The ICC asked if we could host the World Cup, but I clearly said no. We are in the monsoon season, and we’re also hosting the Women’s ODI World Cup next year. I don’t want to host two World Cups in a row.”
With India out of the picture, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are now possible options to host the tournament.
Initially, the ICC wanted to hold the tournament in Bangladesh, but the ongoing political unrest has forced them to reconsider. An ICC official said that they are closely monitoring the situation with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and security experts. The safety of all participants is their top priority.
Despite the challenges, Muhammad Yunus’s interim government in Bangladesh is making a final effort to keep the tournament in their country.
In addition to security concerns, the BCB is facing internal issues. Their president, Nazmul Hassan, and several board members have been out of office since the Awami League government fell on August 5.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh cricket team is currently in Pakistan for a two-match Test series and is scheduled to tour India next month for two Tests and three T20Is.
