Nov 7, 2024

Pakistan’s star snooker player, Mohammad Asif, clinched the 2024 IBSF World Snooker Championship title in Doha, marking his third individual world championship victory. Asif, now 42, entered the tournament as a wild card entry from the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA). After passing through the qualifying round, he delivered impressive performances in both the main event and knockout stages to secure the championship.

In the final match, Asif faced Iran’s Ali Gharahgozlou in a best-of-nine frames battle. Asif took an early lead, winning the first frame 70-25, though Gharahgozlou responded with a 94-7 win in the second frame to tie the match. Asif quickly regained control, winning the third frame 62-8 and delivering a flawless 106-point clearance break in the fourth, bringing the score to 3-1. He then dominated the fifth frame, winning it 82-12 for a strong 4-1 lead.

Despite Gharahgozlou’s brief comeback, winning the sixth and seventh frames, Asif closed out the match in the eighth with a powerful 93-point break, sealing his victory.

This championship win adds to Asif’s world titles from 2012 and 2019, putting him on par with India’s Pankaj Advani with three individual world titles. Including two team titles, Asif now has five world titles, making him Pakistan’s most successful snooker player.
