Russia cancels friendly match with Pakistan over team issues

Oct 10, 2024

Russia has officially called off a planned friendly football match against Pakistan, which was scheduled for October 11. The Russian Football Union (RFU) announced the cancellation on Tuesday, citing time constraints and uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s team lineup.

In a statement, the RFU explained that they had been in discussions with Pakistan about organizing the match, but due to the limited timeframe for the training camp, they decided not to proceed.

The situation was complex from the start. The Pakistan Football Federation’s (PFF) Normalisation Committee had informed the RFU weeks earlier that it would be difficult to form a national team in time for the October FIFA window. The PFF had suggested rescheduling for November, but no formal agreement was made.

Despite the PFF’s concerns, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) took an unexpected step, announcing it would send a football team to Russia independently. The PSB planned to field a team made up of players from the Islamabad Football Association (IFA), bypassing the PFF’s authority.

A senior PSB official mentioned that the invitation for the match came directly from the Russian government, through their Minister of Sport. The PSB saw it as an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic ties and quickly assembled a team from local players. However, this team was not considered an official representation of Pakistan by the PFF.

Sources revealed that travel plans were already in place for the PSB’s team before the RFU decided to cancel the match. A list of 18 to 20 players, including some who had recently played for Pakistan in international matches, had been finalized.

This cancellation may come as a relief to players who were caught in a dilemma, as representing the PSB’s team could have jeopardized their future with the PFF. Pakistan’s national team head coach, Stephen Constantine, was also not in favor of allowing national players to participate in this match.

The confusion arose after the PFF initially declined the October match, but the PSB moved forward with its own plans, creating division within Pakistan’s football community. Many questioned the legitimacy of the PSB’s team, since it wasn’t officially sanctioned by the national football federation. Some observers criticized the PSB’s actions, saying football matches should be managed by the PFF, not the sports board.

This episode has exposed the lack of coordination between the PSB and PFF, with many believing that if the PFF had handled the negotiations, a more successful outcome could have been achieved.
