Patrick Vieira set to replace Gilardino as Genoa manager: reports

Nov 20, 2024

Genoa have decided to part ways with coach Alberto Gilardino and have hired former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira as his replacement, according to Sky Sport Italia.

Gilardino, who became Genoa’s coach in July 2022, led the team to a direct promotion to Serie A in 2023. However, he has been let go after a slow start to the current season. The team has earned just 10 points from their first 12 matches and are currently in 17th place, just above the relegation zone.

Vieira, who left French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in July, has previously managed Premier League club Crystal Palace. He now takes charge of Genoa, Italy’s oldest football club, founded in 1893.

Vieira’s managerial career began with Manchester City’s under-23 team from 2013 to 2015. He then moved on to manage MLS’s New York City before spending two years at Ligue 1’s Nice. After that, he managed Crystal Palace.

Vieira will also reunite with Mario Balotelli, who recently joined Genoa. The two worked together at Nice during the 2018-19 season, where Vieira coached Balotelli for 10 matches.
