Lionel Messi made a strong return to action as Inter Miami beat the Philadelphia Union 3-1 on Sunday. After being out for three months due to an ankle injury, Messi scored two goals in just four minutes, in the 26th and 30th minutes of the game.
Earlier in July, Messi hurt his ankle in the Copa America final against Colombia, which kept him out of action. During his absence, Argentina’s national team won 3-0 against Chile but lost 2-0 to Colombia in World Cup Qualifiers.
Before the game against Philadelphia Union, Messi’s return wasn’t confirmed until Friday. Coach Tata Martino was unsure if Messi would start or come off the bench.
The Philadelphia Union took the lead in the first minute, but Messi quickly equalized with his 13th Major League Soccer goal of the season. In the 98th minute, Messi assisted Luis Suarez, who scored the winning goal for Inter Miami.
Messi now has 15 goals and 15 assists for Inter Miami in 19 games. His absence had been a big blow to the team, which had a record of 10 wins, 3 draws, and 1 loss during his time away, and was knocked out of the Leagues Cup in the Round of 16 by Columbus Crew.
Inter Miami currently leads the MLS with 62 points, 10 points ahead of Los Angeles Galaxy and FC Cincinnati in the race for the Supporters’ Shield.
After the match, Messi said he was happy to be back, despite feeling tired from the heat and humidity in Miami. He mentioned he was glad to be training with the team again and pleased to have started the game.
