Ilkay Gundogan Steps Down from Germany’s National Team
Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan has decided to retire from international football.
The 33-year-old shared his decision on social media, a little over a month after leading Germany at the European Championship. Germany was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Spain, who went on to win the tournament.
Gundogan, a former Manchester City player, earned 82 caps for Germany, having made his debut in 2011.
“After thinking it over for a few weeks, I’ve decided it’s time to end my national team career,” he said.
He added, “The highlight of my career was being able to captain the team at our home European Championships last summer! After many years, we finally made the nation proud again — I’m very happy I could be a part of that.”
Gundogan, who is considering leaving Barcelona this summer, said he chose to retire from international football because he felt “tired in both my body and mind” before Euro 2024.
He finished by saying, “I’ll definitely keep supporting this national team, and I hope we can keep improving together. If we do, we’ll be strong contenders for the 2026 World Cup. We have a great coach, a strong team, and a fantastic team spirit.”
Manchester City is reportedly interested in re-signing Gundogan, who won five Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one Champions League during his six years at the club.
Gundogan joined Barcelona last summer on a free transfer but is now thinking about leaving after just one season.
