Germany give Man City keeper Ortega first call-up at age 32
Germany has called up Manchester City’s backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega for the first time ahead of their Nations League matches against Bosnia and Hungary in mid-November.
Ortega, 32, joined Manchester City in 2022 and primarily plays in the Champions League and domestic cups, as Brazilian Ederson is the starting keeper for the Premier League games. However, Ortega has made a strong impression when filling in, and City’s coach Pep Guardiola praised him as “a world-class goalkeeper, an exceptional, exceptional goalkeeper” last season.
Ortega is expected to serve as Germany’s third-choice goalkeeper, behind Alexander Nuebel and Oliver Baumann. Germany currently leads Group A3 in the Nations League and has already secured a spot in the quarterfinals. They will face Bosnia at home on November 16 and then travel to Hungary three days later.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann emphasized the importance of securing the top spot in the group, stating that reaching the Nations League final four next year is a key step in preparing for the 2026 World Cup.
