Atletico Madrid has completed the signing of Julian Alvarez from Manchester City. Earlier this month, The Athletic reported that Manchester City accepted an offer of up to €95 million (£81.8m; $104m) for the 24-year-old Argentine, who then agreed on personal terms with Atletico.
In a statement, Atletico Madrid announced that they have reached an agreement with Manchester City for the transfer of Alvarez, who has signed a six-year contract with the Spanish club.
Alvarez’s move to Atletico is Manchester City’s record sale, earning them a significant profit on the £14 million they paid to sign him from River Plate in 2022.
During his time with Manchester City, Alvarez won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the Champions League. Last season, he made 54 appearances in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 13 assists. Overall, he scored 36 goals in 103 matches for the club.
Alvarez also played a key role in Argentina’s victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and has won the Copa America twice. After representing Argentina in the Copa America earlier this summer, he was part of the Under-23 team that was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games.
Alvarez joins Atletico Madrid after the club allowed Alvaro Morata to move to Milan, and Memphis Depay left at the end of his contract. He is Atletico’s third signing this summer, following defender Robin Le Normand from Real Sociedad and striker Alexander Sorloth from Villarreal.
