Rizwan: Pakistan Deserved Criticism After T20 World Cup Performance
PESHAWAR: Wicket-keeper Mohammad Rizwan has openly admitted that the Pakistan cricket team deserved criticism for their poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. Speaking to the media in Peshawar on Tuesday, Rizwan acknowledged the team’s shortcomings and stressed the importance of facing criticism to succeed.
“After the poor show, we deserve criticism. Those who can’t face the flak cannot succeed,” said Rizwan. He emphasized that the team’s defeat was not due to a single issue but multiple weaknesses that led to Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament.
Pakistan’s early elimination at the group stage of the T20 World Cup sparked widespread criticism from fans, analysts, and cricketers alike. The team’s defeat to the USA, considered a minor team in the cricketing world, was particularly disappointing and drew significant backlash.
Rizwan expressed that the team members were equally disheartened as they failed to meet the expectations of the nation. He stated that following the T20 World Cup debacle, the Green Shirts could no longer claim to have strong batting and bowling capabilities.
Addressing rumors of grouping and bias within the team, Rizwan firmly denied such speculations. He asserted that all players are united in their goal and play for the pride of the green flag.
Commenting on the remarks made by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi about the need for “major surgery” within the team, Rizwan said, “When you get ill, you get surgery. He’s the chairman of the board, and it is his right to decide whom he wants to retain and whom not.”
Rizwan’s candid acknowledgment of the team’s failures and his support for the PCB Chairman’s potential changes highlight a critical moment for Pakistan cricket. The team’s performance in future tournaments will be closely watched as they work to address their weaknesses and restore their standing in international cricket.
