Jason Holder Out of T20 World Cup 2024 Due to Injury, Replacement Named

Jun 28, 2024

Holder captained the West Indies team in the 2019 50-over World Cup

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that Jason Holder, the right-arm pacer and all-rounder, will miss the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 due to an injury sustained during the County Championship 2024. The tournament is scheduled to take place in the United States and West Indies starting from June 1. Left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy has been named as his replacement.

Holder, who previously captained the West Indies in the 50-over World Cup 2019, is known for his crucial role with both bat and ball in the team. His absence will be a significant loss for the Caribbean side as they prepare for the T20 World Cup.

In a statement released by CWI, it was confirmed, “Jason Holder has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury and left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy has been named as his replacement. While Jason Holder’s absence is notable, CWI is confident that the team remains strong and competitive with the inclusion of McCoy.”

The team’s head coach, Darren Sammy, expressed confidence in the depth of their squad, emphasizing that the reserve players are talented and capable of stepping up when needed. He stated, “We are fortunate to have such depth and quality in our ranks. Our reserve players are all A-class talents who have proven their abilities in various formats of the game, particularly T20.”

The updated West Indies squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 includes captain Rovman Powell and vice-captain Alzarri Joseph, along with a mix of experienced players like Andre Russell and promising talents such as Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran.

The tournament features four groups with competitive teams from around the world. West Indies will compete in Group C alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea. The matches promise intense competition as teams vie for a spot in the knockout stages.

As preparations continue, CWI assured that Holder will receive the necessary medical support for his recovery. The team aims to maintain its strength and adaptability as they gear up for the challenges ahead in the T20 World Cup 2024.
