Jadeja Retires from T20I After Winning World Cup

Jul 1, 2024

India’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has announced his retirement from T20 Internationals (T20Is) after helping his team win the T20 World Cup. He joins his teammates Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who also retired from T20Is after the World Cup victory.

Jadeja played 74 T20Is for India, scoring 515 runs and taking 54 wickets. He said that winning the T20 World Cup was a dream come true and the perfect moment to retire. In his farewell message, he expressed his gratitude, saying, “With a heart full of gratitude, I bid farewell to T20 internationals. Like a steadfast horse galloping with pride, I’ve always given my best for my country and will continue to do so in other formats. Winning the T20 World Cup was a dream come true, a pinnacle of my T20 international career. Thank you for the memories, the cheers, and the unwavering support.”

Jadeja’s retirement comes shortly after Kohli and Sharma also announced their retirements from T20Is. Kohli, who played 125 T20Is, ended his career as India’s second-highest run-scorer in the format, with 4,188 runs at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04. Sharma, who played 159 T20Is, retired as the highest scorer in T20I history, with 4,231 runs and five centuries. He has also won two T20 World Cup titles: the first as a player in 2007 and the second as captain in 2024.

The retirement of these three senior players poses a challenge for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), as they were all considered greats in their respective roles. Finding replacements for them will not be easy. However, their retirements also open up opportunities for younger players to step up and make their mark in the T20I format.

Kohli and Sharma’s retirements were somewhat expected, as neither had played T20Is since India’s semi-final defeat in the 2022 T20 World Cup until January of this year, when they resumed playing with a focus on the 2024 World Cup. Their experience and leadership will be missed, but they leave behind a legacy of excellence and dedication that will inspire future generations of cricketers.

India’s T20 World Cup win and the retirements of Jadeja, Kohli, and Sharma mark the end of an era in Indian cricket. Fans will remember their contributions and achievements with fondness and pride.
