Will Shakib Al Hasan play in Champions Trophy?
Shakib Al Hasan Remains in Bangladesh’s Plans for Champions Trophy Despite Challenges
BCB President Faruque Ahmed confirmed on Sunday that all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is still part of Bangladesh’s plans for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, set for February-March next year. However, Ahmed acknowledged the challenges Shakib faces in representing the national team due to his current circumstances.
Speaking at a private event in Dhaka, Ahmed addressed Shakib’s absence from the team, saying, “It’s a challenge for Shakib to play for Bangladesh while being away from the country. Still, he remains integral to our strategy for the Champions Trophy. If his situation is resolved, we believe he can make a significant impact.”
Shakib has been under scrutiny due to his political affiliations with the Awami League and has not played for Bangladesh since October. Following advice from BCB officials, he skipped the home Test series against South Africa and the ODIs against Afghanistan in the UAE. His availability for the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies also seems unlikely.
Ahmed emphasized the difference between franchise cricket and international representation, noting the importance of preparation and team cohesion. “There’s a big difference between playing for a franchise and representing the national team. Shakib’s current situation might affect his mental readiness to compete at the highest level,” Ahmed said.
Despite the challenges, the BCB remains optimistic about Shakib’s ability to contribute if the circumstances allow.
