Two more New Zealand players opt out of central contract to explore franchise leagues

New Zealand cricketer Devon Conway has decided to take a casual contract instead of a central contract for the 2024-2025 season. This choice gives him the freedom to play in South Africa’s SA20 league in January.

Conway, who was born in Johannesburg and has played 20 Tests, 32 ODIs, and 50 Twenty20 matches for New Zealand since 2020, will still be available for all nine Black Caps Tests and next year’s Champions Trophy, according to New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

“The decision to move away from a central contract wasn’t easy, but I think it’s the best choice for me and my family right now,” said the 33-year-old in a statement.

“Playing for the Black Caps is still the highest honor for me, and I’m very passionate about representing New Zealand and winning international cricket games.”

Conway’s decision follows that of his former captain Kane Williamson, who will also play in the SA20 league. NZC has given both players casual contracts to ensure they stay with the team for most of the season, even with the tempting offers from Twenty20 leagues.

“In today’s environment, it’s important to have flexibility in our system to handle the challenges posed by franchise cricket,” said Scott Weenink, NZC’s chief executive.

Conway and Williamson are both in the 15-man squad for a one-off Test against Afghanistan and a two-match series in Sri Lanka in September.

Another New Zealand opener, Finn Allen, along with internationals Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne, has also turned down a central contract and will be available for selection on a game-by-game basis.

NZC said that two new players, yet to be decided, will be given central contracts to replace Conway and Allen.
