LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Thursday that former cricketer Azhar Ali has been appointed as the Head of Youth Development following a formal recruitment process.

In his new role, Azhar will focus on shaping the future of Pakistan cricket by creating and implementing strategies for youth development, building strong grassroots systems, and establishing talent pathways. He will also work closely with regional cricket associations to enhance age-group programs, mentor emerging players under the PCB’s Pathways Programme, and conduct seminars and workshops to prepare young cricketers for challenges on and off the field.

Azhar expressed his excitement about the role, emphasizing the importance of grassroots cricket in nurturing future talent. “I am honored to take on this significant responsibility. Having risen through the age-group system and played extensively in club and domestic cricket, I understand how crucial grassroots development is for producing future stars,” he said.

He added that progress has already been made in youth development, and he aims to build on this foundation to help young talent succeed at the highest level.

Last month, Azhar was also included in the Men’s National Selection Committee alongside veteran umpire Aleem Dar. The former top-order batter had an illustrious career, representing Pakistan in 97 Tests and 53 ODIs. He captained the national team in nine Tests and 31 ODIs and played a key role in Pakistan’s historic ICC Champions Trophy victory in 2017.
