Pakistan lose WTC points for slow over-rate in first Bangladesh Test

Aug 27, 2024

Pakistan have been penalized six World Test Championship points for being slow with their overs during the first Test against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi. Bangladesh have lost three points for the same reason. Pakistan’s team was fined 30% of their match fee, while Bangladesh’s team was fined 15%.

Both captains, Shan Masood and Najmul Hossain Shanto, admitted to the mistake and accepted the penalties, so there were no formal hearings.

As a result, Pakistan remains in eighth place in the World Test Championship standings, while Bangladesh has dropped to seventh, falling behind South Africa. England has moved up from sixth to fourth place, pushing Sri Lanka down to fifth. Even though England won the first Test, their chances of making it to the WTC final are still low.

Sri Lanka is also still in the race for the final but has a tough road ahead.

In the first Test, Bangladesh beat Pakistan by 10 wickets, marking their first-ever Test win against Pakistan. In their previous 13 matches, Pakistan had won 12 and one had ended in a draw.

The two teams will play again in the second Test at the same venue from August 30 to September 3.
