Nothing personal, says Rizwan on Fakhar’s omission
Durban: Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Mohammad Rizwan, has addressed rumors surrounding Fakhar Zaman’s exclusion from the squad for the upcoming South Africa tour. Rizwan clarified that the decision was not based on any personal biases.
Speaking in a video shared by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Rizwan praised Fakhar’s impact on the team and emphasized his value as a game-changer. “Everyone in Pakistan knows Fakhar Zaman and recognizes his contribution. There’s nothing personal here, and we all hope for his quick return because he’s a unique talent for us,” said Rizwan.
The captain explained that Fakhar’s absence was linked to health issues rather than fitness concerns. “It’s not about failing a fitness test or anything like that. He’s been unwell, dealing with something like a viral fever. He’s currently playing in the T20 tournament in Pakistan as part of his recovery, and the medical team is monitoring him closely,” Rizwan stated.
He assured fans that the decision was made collectively with input from the selection committee, coaching staff, and PCB management, all of whom are supportive of Fakhar’s recovery. “We’ve had discussions about this, and everyone wants the best for Fakhar. Hopefully, he’ll be back in the Pakistan lineup soon,” Rizwan added.
However, Fakhar Zaman, who is currently representing the Markhors in the ongoing Champions T20 Cup, has downplayed these concerns, asserting that he is fit. “I’m playing because I’m fit. If given the chance, I will definitely perform. My focus remains on delivering good performances and helping my team win,” Fakhar said.
Interim white-ball head coach Aaqib Javed also commented on the situation, acknowledging Fakhar’s past contributions but citing fitness challenges as the reason for his omission. “Fakhar has been a match-winner for Pakistan for many years. While he’s been facing some fitness issues, we’re in touch with him. Once he’s fully fit, the selection committee will consider him,” Javed explained.
Despite these reassurances, Fakhar has not been named in the squad for the South Africa tour. His last appearance for Pakistan was during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Fans and management alike are hopeful for his return to the national team soon.
