India pip Australia to reclaim top spot in WTC standings
Perth: India reclaimed the top spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings with a commanding 295-run victory over Australia in the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy match at the Optus Stadium on Monday.
This win pushed India to the top of the WTC rankings with a 61.11% win percentage, while Australia slipped to second place with a 57.69% win percentage. India had previously dropped to second after being whitewashed 3-0 by New Zealand in a home series.
Australia, led by Pat Cummins, now needs four more wins to secure their spot in the WTC final.
India Makes History
India broke a 47-year-old record in this series. After being bowled out for just 150 in their first innings, they turned the game around by bowling out Australia for 104, gaining a 46-run lead.
In the second innings, India piled up 487/6, thanks to stellar centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli. This set a daunting 534-run target for the hosts, which they couldn’t overcome.
The victory is India’s largest win by runs in Australia, surpassing the 222-run win they achieved back in December 1977.
