ICC delegation to visit Pakistan amid Champions Trophy dilemma

Nov 22, 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to send a delegation to Pakistan soon, possibly early next week, to address concerns surrounding the 2025 Men’s Champions Trophy. However, the exact dates for the visit remain unconfirmed, and the ICC has yet to officially inform the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) about this trip.

The visit comes amid growing uncertainty about the tournament’s schedule. Reports suggest the PCB has taken a firm stand against the proposed hybrid model for the event and has threatened to boycott matches involving India if the BCCI refuses to send its team to Pakistan. This standoff has delayed the announcement of the tournament’s schedule.

Complicating matters further, broadcasters, who were banking on high-revenue India-Pakistan matches, have voiced their discontent. They have threatened legal action if the ICC fails to deliver a schedule featuring these marquee games. The broadcasters insist that matches between the two rivals are critical for viewership and financial returns.

Sources indicate that discussions between the ICC and BCCI are expected to take place soon, with all parties encouraged to show flexibility to break the deadlock. If mutual agreements are reached, the schedule could be finalized in the coming days.

The ICC is keen to resolve these issues promptly, particularly as BCCI Secretary Jay Shah is set to assume the role of ICC Chairman on December 1. The governing body aims to ensure that the tournament moves forward smoothly and in alignment with all stakeholders’ interests.
