ICC bans Sri Lanka’s Praveen Jayawickrama under council’s anti-corruption code
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has banned Sri Lankan left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama from all formats of cricket for one year due to a violation of its Anti-Corruption Code.
In addition to the one-year ban, Praveen is suspended for six months, as announced by the ICC.
The ban was imposed after Jayawickrama admitted to violating Article 2.4.7 of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code. This section deals with actions that obstruct or delay investigations by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). It includes hiding, tampering with, or destroying any documents or information that could be relevant to an investigation or could serve as evidence of corrupt conduct, according to the ICC’s statement.
Jayawickrama, who last played for Sri Lanka in 2022, represented his country in five Test matches, as well as in ODIs and T20Is, collecting a total of 32 wickets in 15 international appearances.
His charges are linked to international matches and games from the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
Praveen made his Test debut against Bangladesh in 2021, where he took 11 wickets while giving up 178 runs, setting a record as the seventh-best bowling performance by any player on their Test debut.
