Harbhajan Singh empathizes with Pakistan fans amid Champions Trophy dilemma
Harbhajan Singh Laments Likely Absence of Indian Players in Pakistan for 2025 Champions Trophy
Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has expressed disappointment over the prospect of Pakistani cricket fans not being able to watch Indian stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on their home soil during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Speaking to an Indian news channel, Harbhajan highlighted the enthusiasm of Pakistani cricket fans and their longing to see world-class players in action. However, he emphasized the security concerns that have made such an event challenging.
“The situation in Pakistan is not ideal. While every team wants to visit, the circumstances there make it difficult. I feel bad for the people of Pakistan who won’t get to see players like Virat Kohli play in front of them. The fans are great, but the security concerns are real,” Harbhajan said.
He suggested that a hybrid model or alternative arrangements be adopted to ensure the tournament proceeds smoothly.
Deadlock Between PCB and BCCI
The upcoming Champions Trophy has faced uncertainty due to the BCCI’s refusal to send its team to Pakistan. The PCB has firmly opposed the hybrid model proposed for the eight-team tournament.
In a recent development, a “partnership formula” is reportedly being considered to break the impasse. According to this proposal:
- Pakistan will not play their matches in India during ICC events over the next three years.
- Dubai is likely to serve as a neutral venue for matches between the two nations.
Impact on Upcoming ICC Events
India is set to host multiple ICC tournaments in the coming years, including:
- 2025 Women’s World Cup
- 2026 T20 World Cup (co-hosted with Sri Lanka)
- 2027 Champions Trophy
If the partnership formula is agreed upon, it may prevent prolonged disputes and legal action by the PCB. Furthermore, the ICC may finalize the arrangement without needing a formal board vote.
A Missed Opportunity for Fans
The possibility of Indian players skipping Pakistan for the Champions Trophy underscores the ongoing challenges in cricket diplomacy between the two countries. While logistical solutions like neutral venues aim to keep tournaments on track, they deprive fans of the thrill of direct encounters on home grounds.
