England’s Topley Fined After Frustration-Fueled Chair Smash
England pacer Reece Topley has been fined 15% of his match fee for smashing a chair in frustration after sustaining an injury during the first T20 against the West Indies. Topley, a left-arm bowler, injured his knee while bowling on Saturday and had to leave the field. As he headed up the pavilion steps at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, he vented his frustration by smashing a chair against the handrail.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that Topley’s actions violated the code of conduct regarding “abuse of cricket equipment or fixtures.” Along with the fine, Topley received one demerit point. Under ICC rules, accumulating four or more demerit points within a two-year period could lead to suspension.
Despite Topley’s absence, England currently leads the five-match series 2-0, with the third match set to take place Thursday in Gros Islet.
