England-New Zealand Test series named Crowe-Thorpe Trophy

CHRISTCHURCH: The upcoming three-match Test series between England and New Zealand has been named the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy, honoring legendary batters Martin Crowe of New Zealand and Graham Thorpe of England.

The trophy, created with the help of both players’ families, will be officially unveiled on Thursday morning before the first Test begins. Made from wood sourced from the bats of the two cricket icons, it symbolizes their remarkable contributions to the game.

Graham Thorpe’s bat, used to score back-to-back Test centuries against New Zealand in 1997, and Martin Crowe’s bat, with which he scored a century at Lord’s in 1994, were combined to craft the trophy. Renowned designer David Ngawati, who also created the Tangiwai Shield for the New Zealand-South Africa Test series, was responsible for this unique piece.

NZC CEO Scott Weenink praised the initiative, calling it a meaningful way to honor two legends and keep their stories alive.

“Today’s players stand on the shoulders of legends like Graham and Martin,” Weenink said. “It’s important to honor their legacy and the impact they had on the game.”

Richard Gould, CEO of the ECB, shared similar sentiments, describing the tribute as “fitting” for such exceptional players.

“Both men were legends of cricket. Honoring them through this series helps preserve their memory and their incredible contributions to the sport,” Gould said.

The Crowe-Thorpe Trophy will be presented by Martin Crowe’s sister, Deb Crowe, and former England captain Michael Atherton during the pre-match ceremony, just before the national anthems on Thursday.
