Big names missing as New Zealand announce squads for SL white-ball series
The New Zealand cricket team has announced its squads for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, featuring some fresh faces and notable absences. Mitchell Santner will captain both squads, taking over white-ball leadership duties from Kane Williamson, who, along with Devon Conway, will miss the series to play in the SA20 league.
A major highlight is the inclusion of uncapped player Bevon Jacobs, who is set to debut in the T20I series. Jacobs, known for his explosive batting in New Zealand’s domestic T20 competition, the Super Smash, earned his spot after an impressive 16-ball 39 in a warm-up match against Sri Lanka. With a striking rate of 188.73 for Canterbury Kings, Jacobs has been rewarded for his standout performances. However, he will only feature in the T20Is and not the ODIs.
The T20I squad also welcomes Zak Foulkes, Mitch Hay, and Tim Robinson, who recently debuted during New Zealand’s last tour of Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, experienced players like Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, and Matt Henry return after missing that series.
In the ODI squad, seasoned campaigners Tom Latham, Will O’Rourke, and Will Young make their comeback, having been rested for the T20Is. Latham will resume his role as wicketkeeper-batter, while O’Rourke and Young strengthen the batting lineup.
Luke Ronchi will serve as head coach for this series, providing regular coach Gary Stead with a well-earned break.
