Aqib Javed Set to Become Pakistan’s White-Ball Head Coach
LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly planning to appoint Aqib Javed, a member of the national selection committee, as the head coach for the men’s white-ball cricket team. Sources shared this development on Sunday.
Javed’s first task as head coach will likely be the upcoming white-ball series against Zimbabwe, starting on November 24. The series will feature three ODIs and three T20Is, running until December 5. With the team’s busy schedule, a decision on his appointment is expected soon.
Aqib Javed is seen as the leading candidate due to his extensive coaching background, which includes successful spells with domestic teams and franchise cricket.
This news follows Gary Kirsten’s unexpected resignation from the head coach position just before the team’s departure for the Australia tour. In response, the PCB brought in Jason Gillespie as an interim head coach for the white-ball squad.
Although there were rumors that the PCB might offer Gillespie the role permanently, he has made it clear he’s not interested. Speaking to Australian media, Gillespie said, “I’ve only taken up this role on an interim basis. I’m not looking for a full-time white-ball coaching position.”
He added, “I love coaching, but spending 11 months a year away from home isn’t something I can manage mentally or personally. My family comes first.”
With Gillespie out of the running, Aqib Javed appears to be the board’s top choice for the position.
